Can budget body armor actually be trusted? In this video, John Lovell and Paul test a lightweight budget armor plate to see how it handles real rounds and whether the tradeoffs are worth it.
You can order the plate here: https://www.warriorpoetsupplyco.com/collections/body-armor/products/tactical-scorpion-gear-level-iii-pe-polyethylene-body-armor-plate-multi-curved
This plate is a lightweight multi-curve poly body armor plate weighing around 3.5 lbs and priced under $250 at the time of filming. It is marketed as Level III+, but there is one major catch: it is NIJ tested, not NIJ certified. That distinction matters.
We test the plate with pistol rounds and M193 rifle rounds, then talk through the real-world considerations: weight, comfort, green tip protection, certification, plate size, mission profile, and whether “something is better than nothing” when it comes to body armor.
Topics covered in this video:
Budget body armor vs premium armor
Lightweight poly armor plates
Level III+ body armor limitations
NIJ tested vs NIJ certified
Green tip / M855 considerations
10x12 vs 8x10 armor plates
Plate carrier setup and real-world use
Body armor for preparedness, training, and personal protection
