Trailer Link:
I just saw the trailer for this and immediately thought that it would be an interesting discussion topic, both for the community and for the Warrior Poet Society channel. This trailer was apparently dropped seven days ago. I am very curious as to other peoples' opinions on it, so here is mine. (Note: I ended up writing a lot, so I split it up into sections. I have a my summarized opinion at the end if you want to just skip to that.)
The Story. The movie is about two or three groups of people: a warzone photographer and her partner, a family, and I think this group that centers around this older man that at first I thought was with the photographer. The latter two groups appear to be simply trying to survive, while the photographer wants to capture what is going on on the ground. The main plot is that California and Florida (and maybe Texas and a couple other states according to a map they show) have broken from the Union and appear to be trying to take more territory and ultimately strike at Washington, DC. There are somewhat obvious hints, from my initial observation, that the sitting President (who I believe is played by Nick Offerman from parks and rec) and the US Government are the true "bad guy" of this movie, like the fact that the President is on his third term of office and that he is giving an obviously false speech of surety of victory over the rebellious forces throughout the entire trailer (obviously in that shots appearing to show the opposite play after he says this). There are also shots of jets and choppers dropping bombs and shooting rockets into civilian occupied territory. I won't summarize the whole trailer, but those were the main beats I picked up on. Summary: Appears to be more thriller than action and may turn out to be a dud, but I am still very interested to see the full story unfold as initially presented.
The Message. In my opinion, having only watched it once, it looks interesting but has the potential to be a propaganda movie for one side or the other of the political aisle. On one side it could push the idea that if one side is in power the Government will be completely taken over and used to oppress the people, while on the other it could push the idea that civilians having the power to fight back against their Government will only bring harm to those not involved and such a conflict will only end with needless loss of life because the US Military is very powerful and is willing to use its full military might against any form of rebellion. I don't trust trailers to show us the true "moral" or message of the movie right away, so I will reserve judgment until further information is put forth. That said, this movie also has the potential to be a very insightful look at what a war-torn USA might look like, what could end up happening if we keep concentrating on those things that make us different, though maybe this would be an extreme example for shock value (which is a valid way of sending a message in media, though abused). Summary: It could turn out to be quite nuanced and show the war from different perspectives in a fairly honest light (as honest as any movie can be), but it could also turn out to be a propagandistic dud that plays on peoples' fears and reinforces their biases against those who disagree with them.
The Art. I have not studied the trailer in detail, but my initial thoughts on the filmmaking side of the trailer lean towards the idea that this is a fairly well shot and written movie, with intention behind the camera placement and proper limitation of visual effects. The combat shots don't appear to be totally CGI but look like they were shot in a physical place with actual people in the backgrounds and foregrounds. The explosions are well made, though possibly copied from a visual effects resource site, especially that one shot of the explosion that is implied to be a bomb dropped by a squad of jets. The crowd shots might be partially or fully CGI as far as the number of people, but its hard to tell. The shot of the chopper going through DC is obviously CGI, but even so it looks real, with good lighting that actually has an origin point and smoke that isn't just copy pasted from a resource site. The actors speak their lines with proper intention and emotion, though some of the lines in the trailer seemed a bit out of place (but that's just an editing thing). Summary: Looks promising, well put together, cutting of corners only where necessary and treating the movie as a work of art that must be properly shaped and shaded and not as a money making machine.
Final thoughts. I am very interested to see where this movie may go as it appears to be the work of people who actually care about making a good movie, but I have grown cautious when counting my chickens these days. I pray that at the very least it is well made and well written by people who actually care about the story they are trying to tell, even if I end up not liking it.
