The laws are pretty psycho, as you said. But they only had 1.2% compliance with the "assault weapon" registration requirement, so there is major pushback by the people while legal challenges continue. It's hard to say what would happen if you brought a prohibited gun into the state, but it probably depends on what part of the state you are in. Some counties have declared themselves 2nd amendment sanctuaries so if you stay away from the blue cities then you may be okay.
