Natchez Shooters Supply often has the best pricing on 9mm, and if you catch a special (which happens frequently) you can get free shipping. (https://www.natchezss.com/)
I joined Target Sports USA's Prime Membership. Free shipping and 5%-8% discounts on ammo. Can be a -really- good deal just for shipping alone. Ammo is heavy. :)
One trick for saving money on ar15 ammo. If your AR15 is 5.56, you can also shoot .223. SGAmmo has steel case Wolf .223 for $0.38/rd. For target / range work this is MUCH cheaper than $0.65/rd for brass case 5.56.
You can always try ammoseek.com.
I second AmmoSeek. Take your time to hunt around for a solid reliable dealer with minimal to no shipping and a decent price is better than the cheapest ammo but then you make up for the difference and then some paying shipping, find that balance. AmmoSeek also has reviews you can peruse prior to making your purchase to help you find that solid reliable dealer.
optics planet is selling ammo now, prices go up and down but you can get some good buys there and its free shipping. One thing I do is if Im going to pay more for a round then I try to buy a better grade then a cheaper. But Im not also mag dumping speer gold dot either... Better ammo tends to be more consistent. Brownells has a membership for $50 a year with free 2 day shipping on everything. I think Brownells has a magtech 223 for about $ .48 a rd. Optics Planet has a sale too, code FAMILY for 9% off and code FRIEND for 6% off ammo 👍🤠
I also keep an eye on Recoil Gunworks and Global Ordinance. I always look for free/discounted shipping and no sales tax.
I use a local shop and get the best rates.
In summer 2020, I had a group of 15ish sites that I'd open every morning to check if they had ANYTHING at any price. Palmetto State is usually pretty good at keeping prices low on ammo, but availability can still be a problem.
Since then, I've used Ammo Squared subscription. They let you set a budget, select what type of ammo, then you can set up shipping triggers or just have them store until you're ready. I've been able to stay below below 40 cents/round for 9mm, and around 55 cents for .223/.556. It has been as low as 32 and 38 cents, respectively. Also, free shipping if the value of your shipment is $250+.
Only drawback is you don't know for sure what brands you'll get. Most of the 9 has been CCI Blazer or PMC Bronze. The has been almost all PMC Bronze with a little American Eagle. The brands for other calibers I get are all over the place. I don't think I've gotten more than 2 boxes of the same type of .22 from them.
I typically shop around, and just keep my eyes open for deals on the calibers and types that I want. Just heard about https://nautilusammunition.com (sponsored Langley Outdoors Academy on YT), which looks like they have 9mm and .223 FMJ, brass casings; good prices for range ammo. Supposedly a subscription service (maybe in the works?).
Compiles and compares ammo from other online retailers and breaks it down to cost per round. Pretty cool website you can search any caliber and it shows if its steel, brass, new or remanufactured too.
I have found some decent deals at Norma www.normashooting.com. They generally have pretty low thresholds for free shipping at $50.
I like using Cabela's. When ammo supplies were really thin, they were one of the few that did not gouge on prices. When they had ammo, they charged normal prices. So, I like giving them the business, and icing on the cake their prices are often as good or close to online.
Being on social security with a VERY tight budget I always shop around for the lowest price on 9mm that I can find. I've found rediculously high and really good prices all over the place so I don't stick with one supplier and I always get the one with free shipping. My problem is I'm a stickler on reliability and I don't really trust russky ammo. But I guess being a cold war kid put that in my head permanently.
The ammo you take to the range can (and should) be the cheapest you can find. I've found the Russian steel case stuff to be perfectly adequate. (Feeds fine, reasonable groups, very few malfunctions). For self defense, I always use something like Federal HST. It's expensive, but it's only used for zeroing to the carry ammunition and rotated out every 6 months or so.
Use the cheap stuff for practice. It'll save $$.
I don't particularly care so much about origin, but my "problem" with Russian/other ammo is that I have very little insight into manufacturing processes, and I know nothing about the companies manufacturing or distributing it. Some people say it's all great, no issues of reliability or usage; others say it's not. And my local ranges don't allow it to be used (steel-cased, anyway; they magnet-check what everyone brings in), which makes it near-impossible for me to try anything out anyway.
Target Sports or Velocity Ammo have been my go to for bulk ammo.
If your looking to support a made in America Ammo manufacturer, with a zero compromise attitude when it comes to the 2nd Amendment check out Fenix Ammo. Been shooting their ammo for years and it doesn't disappoint. Not inexpensive but anything of quality rarely is.
Awesome - I'll check them out!
I've been going to this website. https://gun.deals/ It finds deals from physical stores all over the country. Brownells is one of them. They like to make combo sales that are hard to turn down. It got me through the worst of the drought. There's still no 338 win mag though... I think that round died.
